Interpretive Dance

Annalyssia Hernandez

Home: Welcome

Interpretive dance is a way for dancers to portray a message or idea through dance. Many of them use sets to tell their story. The first dancers to do this in the 1900s were Isadora Duncan (aka the mother of modern dance) and Loie Fuller, taking the strict ballet moves and turning them into stronger and more free movements. It is often used in musicals to emphasize the scene while making it visually appealing. Each move expresses a certain emotion. It breaks away from classical ballet, things like the apparel, movements, and shoes are often more freeing. It falls under modern dance, jazz, and ballet. It is similar to lyrical dance. Their sets and clothing often connect to the message and are built to make the message easier to digest. Kind of interesting: Isadora Duncan had been in an extremely bizarre accident when her flowy scarf had got caught in the wheel and strangled her to death.

Isadora Duncan & Loie Fuller

The top three photos are of Isadora Duncan one of them showing her cause of death. The second three are of Loie Fuller, her dances (as you can see from her attire) were very expressive.

TEN x WINWIN

The first example I have is a choreography video by Ten and WinWIn, both professional dancers and music artists from Thailand and China.

WinWin: “I am wearing gray and he is wearing white... and I represent the bad person...and he is the good person… I think people will interpret our performance in many different ways but I think it’s okay to understand it in your own way.”

Ten: “I think the most difficult part was that we had to decide everything on our own, from what we wear for this performance, to what we should put on our set to express our story”

"I'm Gay"

Another example I have is the music video titled “I’m Gay”  by Eugene Lee Yang. He uses color to express each aspect of being LGBTQ+ and has very intricate sets for each color along with wardrobe, hair, and makeup that fit with each color and story.
The colors each tell a different story
RED:nature
ORANGE:nurture
YELLOW:love
GREEN:community
BLUE:hate
PURPLE:pride
